Bites & Quarantine
What to Do if Your Pet Bites a Person
Reporting all animal bites helps prevent the spread of rabies. Rabies is a serious and potentially deadly disease. It is transmitted via the saliva from an infected animal by a bite or direct contact. Make sure your own dog and /or cat has a current rabies vaccination and keep your dog's license up to date.
If your pet bites a person or another animal and the incident is not an emergency, you are required to report the incident to Lathrop Animal Services at 209-647-6400. Please leave a detailed message and include your phone number. Report as much information about the incident as possible, including the date, time and location where the bite occurred. An Community Service Officer will contact you during business hours.
Bites are defined as a laceration, lesion, or puncture that has ruptured the skin. If your dog or cat bites a person, it is a State Law that the animal be placed on quarantine for 10 days. During the quarantine, the animal is on strict confinement and monitored for any changes in behavior or health. If quarantine is conducted at the Shelter there will be a $60 quarantine fee and additional Boarding fee of $10 per day. Home approved quarantine fee is $60. Failure to follow quarantine regulations will result in a misdemeanor citation.
