Hello,

I am a concerned Mossdale parent who has previously brought up traffic and child safety issues on and around the streets surrounding Mossdale Elementary.

I have noticed that since the return from Winter break not sure if parents have suddenly developed gross disregard for traffic laws or because of complacency, pick-up and drop-off just has become irresponsible and dangerous for children and other drivers.

My concern is specifically concentrated along McKee Blvd from the traffic circle in from of City Hall down along to Mossdale Elementary (I believe its Southbound).

There are a total of 4 "No Parking" signs posted along with 'bike lane' signs. We know quite a few students ride bikes, scooters, skateboards to school along this route; hence these traffic prohibitions to keep everyone safe. Previously when we had the Lathrop PD Community Service officer, he would occasionally tell parents that they cannot drop off their kids as it is a no parking zone and bike lane. This was a daily occurrence and mostly the same parents were repeat offenders.  This year we literally will have non-stop cars pulling over to drop off and pick-up their kids; drop-off being worse. There have been so many occasions when kids in the bike lane have to stop or have almost been hit by these drivers trying to exit into traffic. Then we have parents who will make a U-Turn from this same area. Another issue I have noticed that recently when the crossing guard has the kids crossing and the cars heading North and making a right turn onto Cresent Moon Drive, these drivers will continue to turn while the crossing guard has his sign up.

Kids do not fully understand and comprehend traffic laws and the mechanisms of the operations of a motor vehicle. They do not understand it takes time for cars to fully stop and they may think they are safe to cross or be on their bike in the bike lanes but if drivers do not obey traffic laws, then the entire purpose of having any of these laws is futile.

I have some photos and videos where you can see a student on a bike having to navigate with these illegally parked cars.  I also feel that by now we are almost done with 75% of the school year and Lathrop PD's involvement is warranted with stricter repercussions for such drivers and the City of Lathrop needs to find a safer solution for traffic along this route.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration in this matter.

Regards,

Joshna Basant.
