Hi, This is Jim Hilson with Measure C and SJCOG. I am writing to inform you of a serious issue that has been created by the road construction paving signs on Thompson Road by Lathrop School. As usual MUSD could care less and is placing the blame on Lathrop.
Basically the signs have closed many parking spots that are used by the school staff. The school does not have adequate parking on the property for their staff and they MUST have a place to park. My wife works at both Lathrop and Widmer and needs to leave one school and get to the other school in a timely manner. With the parking restrictions now in place she can't do her job at either school without substantial inconvenience. She is not the only one. She says that roughly 20 workers now have to park blocks away and walk in through the construction to get to and from the school site. There are a substantial number of no parking zones around Lathrop School permanently in place.
I will give this construction project a big fat "F" for many reasons. Currently my street is bounded on both ends by no parking signs. If paving were to commence at both ends I would be once again trapped at home. I already reamed one worker a few new holes when they had both ends of the street closed at the same time and made sure he knew that they were inadequate amateurs regarding road closures and emergency access. And I am not the only one who you may need to contend with on my block. Former Mayor Rhodes lives on the affected blocks of Milestone and Revere where these no parking zones exist right now.
Perhaps the biggest fiasco of all of this is the lack of scheduling sense. The signs say the no parking zones end on October 10. Nobody seems to have bothered to check the school schedules or they would see that the school is out scheduled to be out on recess the following week which is the logical time to close Thompson where the parking places are and repave that section of road. The roads should be closed in a logical manner with minimum disruption to the residents and provisions for places to park in front of houses, not signs saying no parking for 3 weeks during the day. Where should all of the people on J street park when everything is marked no parking all around them? What about Thompson and 5th which are all closed at the same time?
I'm not sure who dropped the ball, but some prompt attention would be appreciated before you won't be able to hold a city council meeting next month beyond the public comments item on the agenda due to the overflowing group of people ready to complain and take up their full 5 minutes each.
