Hello,
I am writing in regards to speed limits on Somerston and River Islands Parkway. They both have a speed limit of 40 mph and I was wondering if they could be changed to 30 mph. It is a common complain on how people like to “burn rubber” on these streets. We are surrounded by streets at 25 mph, so when they arrive at Somerston or River Islands Parkway, they feel they can finally floor it, and 40 mph turns into 45 mph or faster between each stop.
As my backyard rears to Somerston, I can attest this happens various times per day, not to mention what sounds like racing at night. Just last night someone reached Somerston and floored it, once they got to Somerston and Lakeside Drive they did many donuts. On FaceBook it was reported that they then moved onto River Islands Parkway and did the same thing there.
Not only is this a nuisance, but it’s down right dangerous. We have many residents that love to be out and about walking or bike riding getting some exercise. Though we do have bike lanes on Somerston and River Islands Parkway, people don’t feel safe using them. On our Facebook community page most felt it was too dangerous to use them because of the drivers. A distracted driver at 40+ is obviously more dangerous than 30mph. Once we go back to in-person school, we will have many kids walking home. Those are long streets for a child to cross and reducing the speed limit is one way to make it safer for the kids. We have two schools whose children need to cross Somerston to get home, River Islands Tech and Steam Academy. Two other schools are planned which will be near River Island Parkway. As our community grows there will be more cars and more people, hopefully we can take a proactive approach for everyone's safety.
Thank you for your time and I hope to hear back from you soon.
