I really have a hard time with a situation that has been going on for years, and the perfect opportunity to fix the issue came up and while revamping Fire Station 31. In an attempt to save a few thousand dollars the city, or whoever, saw fit to ignore the existing problem and chose to continue as is to the possible detriment of a Million dollar ladder truck the fire department has.
Years ago when they widened J St. from the West side of the property at 710 J St. to 5th St. they made the slope of the street completely wrong. (You can see the huge hump in the middle of the street when you look at it.)
Ever since Fire House 31 got their ladder truck, and the fact that it is so much longer then any of the other trucks, when the truck makes the turn to go along the West side of the station the levelers/supports at the back of the truck dig into the asphalt. The combination of the slope of the street being made improperly and the slope of the driveway being to steep makes it almost impossible for some of the firetrucks to enter the back of the station without dragging the ground. (Some of the city trucks also have issues when they go to fill up with gas.)
The longer this goes on, the chance of doing major damage to the firetrucks undercarriage and the asphalt itself is going to grow.
It would have been a very simple undertaking, while they worked on the firehouse, to remove a little of the asphalt up to the pump station and lessen the grade of the driveway to alleviate the problem.
It's still not to late to rectify the issue and do a little work on either J St. or the driveway cement and asphalt to make it easier for the firetrucks to go in and out of the driveway on the West side of Station 31.
Let's be a little proactive in this and fix the problem before a very expensive piece of fire equipment is damaged.
