Bite Reports & Quarantining
What to Do if Your Pet Bites a Person or Another Animal
Reporting all animal bites helps to prevent the spread of rabies. Rabies is a serious
and potentially deadly disease. It is transmitted via the saliva from an infected
animal by a bite or direct contact. Make sure your own dog and /or cat has a current
rabies vaccination and keep your dog's license up to date.
If your pet bites a person or another animal and the situation is under control,
you are required by law to report the incident immediately to Lathrop Animal Services
at 209-941-7240. If no one is in the office, please leave a detailed message and
be sure to include your call back number. Try to report as much information about
the incident as possible, including the date, time and location where the bite occurred
and the type and description of the animal that bit you and its current location.
If you are bitten and the situation is not under control and you or other people
continue to be in imminent danger, call Lathrop Animal Services during regular business
hours at 209-941-7240; during non-business hours, call San Joaquin County Sheriff’s
Office at 209-468-4400 for a Lathrop Police Services Officer or call 911.
If your dog or cat bites a person, your dog or cat will need to be placed on quarantine
for 10 days. This can be done at your residence if an Animal Services Officer determines
that your yard is secure. If not secure, then your pet will need to be quarantined
at the shelter in Manteca. If at the shelter, your pet will be monitored carefully
for any signs of rabies; if at your home, you are required to monitor and immediately
report any change in your pet’s health or behavior. During the quarantine
time, your pet is not allowed to run loose, go for walks, go for car rides or any
other activity that would expose him/her to anyone else. Your pet will remain on
quarantine until an Animal Services Officer examines and releases him/her.
What to Do if You or Your Pet is Bitten by a Domestic or Wild Animal
Skunks, bats, raccoons are high risk rabies carriers and are found in the City of
Lathrop. If your dog or cat is bitten or comes into direct contact with a wild animal,
report the incident immediately to Lathrop Animal Services at 209-941-7240. Remember,
it is important that you keep your pets from coming in contact with wild animals.
